Overview

Catanzaro is a city in Calabria, in southern Italy, and the capital of both the Province of Catanzaro and the Calabria region. People searching for birth records from “Catanzaro” often mean one of two things: a record from the city itself, or a record from a smaller town somewhere in the province. That distinction affects where you search.

There are two main routes. For historical births, you can browse digitized civil registers online. For more recent births, or for an official document, you can request a copy from the comune.

City versus province

The Province of Catanzaro includes many separate comuni, each of which kept its own civil registers. A family might say “we are from Catanzaro” when they came from a village in the province. Check emigration papers, marriage records or naturalization documents for the exact comune. If the town is small, find out whether it was a separate comune at the time or part of a larger one, because the records are held under the registering comune.

Provincial boundaries have also changed over time. Some areas once associated with Catanzaro now belong to other provinces, so if a town is not appearing in the Catanzaro listings, check neighboring provinces too.

Historical records online

Antenati. The Antenati portal hosts digitized civil registers from many Italian state archives. Look for the archive covering Catanzaro, then choose the comune, record type and year. Coverage differs by archive and by period, so confirm what is available for your town on the portal itself.

FamilySearch. FamilySearch has Italian civil registration collections, and some Calabrian records may be searchable by name or browsable by town and year. Use the collection list for Italy and look under Catanzaro or the specific comune.

Parish registers. For births before civil registration, baptismal registers kept by the local parish are the main source. Some are digitized, and others are held by the diocese or the parish. Our guide to Italian genealogy church records explains how to find them. See our overview of Italian birth records online for how to combine civil and church sources.

A note on civil registration in southern Italy

Southern Italy had civil registration before unification, introduced during the Napoleonic period and continued under the Bourbon kingdom, though the form of the records changed over time. After Italian unification, a nationwide system started in 1866. A 19th-century Calabrian birth may therefore sit in a register with a different format depending on the year, so be ready for variation in layout and detail.

Requesting a recent record from the Comune di Catanzaro

For births that are not available online, you can request a copy from the municipality’s civil status or demographic services office. Typical requirements, which you should confirm on the comune’s current website, include:

  • The full name of the person, plus the date and place of birth.
  • A statement of your relationship and your reason for requesting the document.
  • A copy of your identity document.
  • A delegation form if someone else is submitting the request for you.

Requests are commonly accepted by email, post, or in person, depending on the office, and some offices ask for a specific form. The record must be registered in the comune where you apply. If the birth was registered elsewhere, you need to write to that comune instead.

Italian law restricts who can obtain full copies of recent records. Eligible requesters generally include the person named on the record and others with a legally recognized interest, but the details are set by the office, so ask directly if you are unsure.

Certificate types and legalization

You may be offered a basic certificate, a summary extract, or a full copy of the original record (copia integrale dell’atto di nascita). The full copy includes the marginal annotations, such as marriages or adoption notes. If you need to use the document abroad, you may also need an apostille, a form of legalization. A digital copy may not be accepted for that purpose, since an apostille is normally applied to a paper document signed by a public official. In Italy, the apostille is typically issued by the prefecture, which for Catanzaro would be the Prefettura di Catanzaro. Check this with the office that will receive the document.

The state archive in Catanzaro

The Archivio di Stato di Catanzaro holds older records for the province. If a register you need is not online, you can contact the archive to ask about access and research services. Fees and procedures may apply.

Tips for Calabrian research

  • Surnames and given names can vary in spelling from one register to another, and dialect forms sometimes appear.
  • Women are generally recorded under their maiden names in Italian civil records, which helps you trace both sides.
  • Marriage and death records often state the birth town and age, so they are useful backup sources. See how to find death records in Italy.
  • If the birth was registered years later, search a range of years around your estimate.
